Obituary for ANNIE BOYD
Annie Crissella Hampton Johnson Boyd began her earthly journey on October 9, 1925 to Rev. Curtis S. Hampton and
Ida l. Hampton in Madisonville, Kentucky. She was the only child to be blessed to their union. Monday August 10,
2020 she came face to face with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
The family moved to the Westside of Chicago, IL in 1928. She attended Jefferson and Gladstone Grammar schools and
graduated in 1939.
Annie attended a spring revival in 1931 and accepted Christ, officiated by Rev J. M. Fostel. In 1943 Annie was one of
the original members of the first black church to be located in the Lawndale area which her father was the pastor. While
a member of Lawndale Interracial Missionary Baptist Church she was a Choir Member, Sunday School Teacher, Church
Secretary and filled in anywhere there was a need.
That same year she graduated from McKinley High School, where she excelled in business classes. After graduation from
a Business College she began her employment with Stewart Warner Co during World War II.
In 1945 she married George Johnson and this union bore two children Cecelia and George Johnson. This union was
later dissolved.
In 1957 she married Rev. Cleophas D. Boyd Sr, which created a blended family of 3 girls and 7 boys; Evelyn, Cecelia,
Kay, Charles, Aubrey, Cleophas Jr. George, Ricky, Dwayne and Bernard.
Upon leaving Stewart Warner she accepted a position with Gem Jewelers as a Sales Manager. During this time, she and
her husband Cleophas Boyd Sr. owned and operated A Texaco service station. Following her employment with Gem she
accepted a position as a Collections Manager at Spiegel. She continued her Collections Manager career with Allied
Transamerica, Signode and Illinois Tool Works, where she remained until her retirement in 1990.
1981 she became the First Lady of Brotherly Love Baptist when her husband
was installed as the pastor. While a member of Brotherly Love she served on
the Deaconess Board, was a Sunday School Teacher, Mother’s Board,
Progressive Women, lead for the outreach of “World Vision” as facilitator
and distributor of “Daily Bread” devotional reading. Annie C. remained a
faithful member until her health prevented her from doing so. Daily she read
several of the Daily devotionals which she subscribed. She also enjoyed the
Biblical Word Search books.
Annie and Cleophas Sr. hosted several annual family celebrations for their
large family as she enjoyed cooking. She was affectionately called
“Grand Ma Ann”. She loved working in her yard and spending time
with her church family both in person and via the phone. She
demonstrated her love for God by the way she treated her family,
neighbors and friends.
As her health declined two of her grandchildren Daryce and
Bryan provided her with special care as she insisted on remain-
ing in the family home. They performed household chores
such as cleaning and shopping either in person or via the
internet. They provided transportation to her various commit-
ments.
