Mary Ann Hawthorne, was born on the blessed day of April 14,1946 to the union of George Sr.
and Evelyn Bell in Chicago, Illinois. She was the second of three children:
Josephine, Mary and George Jr. Mary accepted Jesus Christ into her life at an early age and was
proud to share his love with all she knew.
Mary completed her studies at Wendell Philips High School and then entered the workforce. Her
first job was at the Chicago Civic Center. She then went on to work for the Chicago Health
Department. After 36 years of service with the Chicago Health Department she retired. After
retiring, she volunteered at her church, St. Ethelreda Catholic Church. She also sang in the choir
and taught Sunday School. Her love for children provided the opportunity to teach at the St.
Ethelreda Catholic School. When St. Ethelreda Catholic church closed she became a member at
St. Kilian Catholic Church. Her final membership was at St Thomas More Roman Catholic
Church until she became ill.
Mary married Irving P. Hawthorne Sr and her focus was on being an amazing and devoted
mother. She poured every ounce of love and knowledge - both practical and biblical into Irvin P.
Hawthorne Jr., Carl Frazier Sr. and her grandchildren Carl Jr., Victoria, and Ashley.
Mary was a trusted, loving, “tell it like it is,” spunky, Christ loving, hilarious, caring friend and
family member. She had an enormous heart, a warm and inviting smile, along with the most
infectious laugh.
