Obituary for Melvina Jackson

Melvina Jackson was born May 24, 1932 in Tunica, Mississippi to
Charlie Westbrook and Ruby Foster; both preceded her in death.
She attend school in Tunica, Mississippi. Melvina married Joshua
Jackson in 1948, who preceded her in death. She gave birth to a
baby girl in 1954. Melvina came to Chicago in 1956 and worked in
housekeeping for Rush University Medical Center.
She joined New Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church in the
early 60’s where she became a member of the Church as well as the
Mother. She also sang in the L.R.E. ensemble under the leadership
of Reverend Leroy Elliott Sr. Melvina spent her golden years
fostering children.
Melvina had three brothers, Charlie Westbrook, Buddy Westbrook
and Lonnie Simmons, two preceded her in death; two sisters, Ora
Lee Simmons and Mattie May Westbrook, both preceded her in
death.
Melvina departed this life on Tuesday, July 13, 2021.
She leaves to cherish her memory: Her daughter, Shirley Westbrook;
four grandkids, Shawnetta, Nakia, Angela and George Jr.; one spe-
cial great granddaughter, Shakia; one brother, Charles Westbrook;
three special cousins, Ruthie Reed, Chestina Humphrey and Mary
Ann Baggett; and a host of relatives, great grandkids, great great
grandkids, cousins other family members and friends. She had a
union with Henry Hardin for 13 years.
